CineClub Azúcar present: PICO: Un Parlante de África en América, Invernomuto & Jim C. Nedd (2020)
March 23 @ 6:00 pm - 10:00 pm

Join us on Sunday, 23rd March at 6 PM for the second installment of CineClub Azúcar, a space to watch and discuss cinema and moving-image works from Abya Yala. This month, we’ll be watching PICO: Un parlante de África en América.
Filmed in 2017, the documentary follows the woodworkers, technicians, and craftsmen who assemble and maintain the tradition of picós, vividly decorated sound systems that animate street parties in the Costa Atlántica region of Colombia.
The history of picós can be traced back to the 1960s, yet their roots run deeper, originating from the time of the transatlantic slave trade when coastal cities like Barranquilla and Cartagena served as key access points. The film traces the origins of this transatlantic sonic style inland to a village called Palenque, founded in the 1590s by West Africans who escaped slavery, still inhabited by their descendants, and where new aesthetic and sonic styles were developed.
Hot food is available from 18:00.
The film starts at 18:30.
£4 entry / No one turned away for lack of funds.
