INTRODUCTION TO DRUMMING WORKSHOP
February 18 @ 3:00 pm - 7:00 pm
Kathy Gray had been playing drums in bands for over 15 years, previously playing in Beards and currently plays in NapeNeck, Mia La Metta and Cookerflex. They’ve previously attended the masters program at CeReNeM school of music and residency programs including CAMP (FR). They’ve toured Europe and the U.K. extensively alongside soundtracking and recording work. Predominantly self-taught, they reside widely within the rock/punk sphere but play with polyrhythmic, jazz and experimental tropes. Having taught drums one-to-one and in small groups, Kathy’s aim for this workshop is to provide complete beginners with a practical introduction to the drum kit and the building blocks of some basic beats to allow the participants to make a start on their journeys as drummers.
This workshop is targeted at those who haven’t had access to music education, whether that be through lack of funds, feeling out of place or uncomfortable with being a “beginner” and making mistakes within white/male dominated music environments. The style of the session will aim to be supportive, not judgmental and flexible as to what is of interest to the participants. The workshop is completely free and all equipment needed will be supplied. Due to the small group nature of the workshop, we’re asking applicants to send a short message to apply (written/video/voicenote) giving us an idea of why you’re interested in the workshop, your musical interests and experiences playing music and what you’d ideally like to get out of the day.
Please send applications to: bookings@wharfchambers.org
The workshop will take place at Wharf Chambers, Leeds, LS2 7EQ and will be between 3pm – 7pm (including breaks) on Sunday the 18th of February so please make sure you’re free during this time before applying.
Spaces are limited and all participants must be 18+
