CINEMA PENDING REVOLUCIÓN: A SCREENING OF MEMORIES OF UNDERDEVELOPMENT (1968)

May 22 @ 7:00 pm - 11:00 pm

To celebrate the unique contribution of revolutionary Cuba to world cinema, we are screening MEMORIES OF UNDERDEVELOPMENT, widely considered one of the greatest productions of the Cuban Institute of Cinematographic Art and Industry (ICAIC), and coming in at #169 on Sight & Sound’s list of the greatest films of all time. Directed by the master Tomás Gutiérrez Alea, MEMORIES is a complex character study of a man out of place. When a revolution transforms our society, demanding whole-hearted participation and commitment, what becomes of those who won’t leave, but can’t stay either? Like many of the great ICAIC films of the 1960s, Alea’s masterpiece synthesises and subverts notions of didactic propaganda and aesthetic innovation into a distinctively Cuban cinema. In addition to the feature film, we will be presenting a Cuban short films. There will be a raffle and zines for sale – bring cash! The screening room is wheelchair accessible. This is a social screening, so feel free to arrive late or leave early. This event is open to anyone aged 18 or over, and no one will be turned away for lack of funds. If you can afford it, please consider buying a higher priced ticket, but any amount of money, or even just your time and attention, is greatly appreciated.
